The Artist Apprenticeship Program provides an opportunity for high school students to work with professional artists to create a large work of public art, such as a mural or a metal sculpture. The artist mentors students in planning and specific techniques, and students participate in production and promotion and opening events.

Conversations @ the Center our popular lecture series, Conversations @ the Center, is held four times a year.  Professional artists and arts professionals engage audiences in a discussion of what it is like to work in the visual arts today. Artists and art lovers alike are invited to attend. Each lecture is free and open to the public and is followed by time for questions and discussion.

Exhibit-Connect Workshops, usually taught by the exhibiting artist(s), these workshops explore a theme or technique inspired by the artwork in one of our current exhibitions. GAC works with the artist to find the optimal format, age-group, date, and duration, so these factors vary. The workshps are typically held in the afternoon on weekends.

K-12 School Tours:
Galveston Arts Center invites educators to schedule an up-close experience with contemporary art for their classes. By appointment, students enjoy guided docent tours of all three exhibits, after which a teaching artist leads a classroom art activity that relates to the exhibits. To Request a school tour, please download the Request Form and submit to the Director of Education.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own mateials and work at their own pace. Art Workshops
for adults, children and families are offered throughout the year. Topics vary, coinciding with the time of year, holidays/celebrations, partnerships or current trends in contemporary craft. Recent workshops have explored Mardi Gras masks, polymer clay jewelry, anatomical drawing, handmade wrapping-paper, and more. Check our calendar for upcoming workshops.

Student Art Exhibitions are held in the Peaches Kempner Studio Classroom throughout the year. Student artists, family members, instructors, and-- when applicable, program sponsors are invited to the reception during ArtWalk. Student exhibitions include artwork by children and adults participating in GAC’s various educational/outreach programs, and sometimes by art students from area schools, hospitals, and other educational organizations, allowing participants the experience of having their work displayed in a gallery setting for hundreds to see.

Summer Art Youth Programs
are held all summer long. Beginning in Summer 2016, all programs will take place in our newly refurbished Studio Classroom and will include Friday classes for age groups 5-8 and 9-12, as well as several 5-day Art Camps for ages 9-12. Programs for teens and adults are also offered throughout the summer.
