In a unique partnership, the Galveston Arts Center presents “Through a Child’s Eyes” featuring photographs made by Early Childhood University’s 4th grade students. These exhibits were inspired by GAC’s upcoming exhibition “Home Improvement,” and designed as a community outreach project.
“When I discovered that Hillerbrand + Magsamen’s family-centered photographs would be featured at the Arts Center, I thought of how photography has the unique ability to record the moments that fill our everyday lives,” said GAC’s curatorial assistant India Coleman. “The idea of marrying GAC’s exhibition with a community art project became an exciting reality when DarkeGallery.com agreed to support the effort.”
The 4th graders were given disposable cameras and three weeks to capture their ideas of family. “Through this project we have the privilege to enter a child’s world, and see what they see,” shared Galveston’s 2013 Teacher of the Year, Jessica Antonelli.
The resulting photographs, reviewed by Coleman and GAC’s curator Clint Willour, are decorating a float for the Firefighters Children’s Mardi Gras Parade on Sunday, March 2. Student-photographers are marching behind the float, dressed in colorful t-shirts designed for the occasion. The Hillerbrand + Magsamen family will join sponsor Linda Darke of DarkeGallery.com in the festivities.
One photograph created by each student-photographer will be displayed in a special exhibit at Central Christian Church during ArtWalk on March 8th. The Church is hosting a reception with music and refreshments from 5-7:30pm. The “Through a Child’s Eyes” exhibit is free and all are welcome.
